How to Put the Wow in Your Wii!
with Carey Dodge
Learn how to hook up your Wii/joystick/homemade controller to control sound and
video effects and stuff in your favourite software.
Feb 22nd, 10am-4pm, $100
Do you want to add more interactivity to your Ableton Live session? Are you are looking for other ways to create complex effects in your compositions? Do you want to feel as hip as your five year-old kid? In this full day introductory workshop we will hook up your favourite HID (Human Interface Device), learn some mapping techniques, and create software that does cool stuff. This is a great workshop for the composer/musician/performer/video/installation artist or curious person who feels limited by the keyboard and mouse, and wants to experiment with different ways to interact with computers. Experimenting with various HIDs can open up new and exciting possibilities for performance and complex sound and video effects.
This workshop is appropriate for beginner to intermediate level users of Max/MSP/Jitter. It might be of interest to advanced users if they are unfamiliar with HIDs or want to check out someone else's tips and tricks.
What you need to bring:
- Laptop with Max/MSP/Jitter installed (free 30 day trial download from www.cycling74.com). note: there will be some computers available but participants should not rely on them. Participants can also use similar techniques to those I will be presenting with a program called PureData (www.puredata.org) however, for the workshop I will be using Max/MSP/Jitter.
- Wii and/or joystick (or any other Human Interaction Device) with usb connector. note: please feel free to bring another type of controller but only if you have already set it up to work in Max or PD. There will not be time to troubleshoot connectivity issues for devices other than the Wii and USB HIDs. At least two HIDs will be available for use.
- Ideas! One of the biggest obstacles to getting HIDs to do interesting things is that we focus on the technical novelty as opposed to what we want to do creatively. Bring ideas such as:
- "I want the sound to go swoooosh!"
- "How do I make this sound go crickley-clop-cloop-cleep and not crickley-cloop-clop-clup when I make the Wii gallop like a horse?"
- "I want to have a flanger effect the filter cut-off frequency and when I trigger the kick drum I want the tempo to change depending on the angle of my wrist.", etc...

INTRODUCTION to LINUX & Open Source Software as a sound production environment
with Hector Centeno (bio)
Dec 7th, 1-4pm, $25
Open Source software is software available to anyone for free. This freedom does not only mean cost-free but also freedom of ideology, from market trends and from commercial interests. It is made by a large community of programmers and users around the world that interact mainly through the Internet and who look to create software tools that are productive and available to anyone regardless of social or financial status.
This workshop is directed to anyone using computers for sound art, electroacustic music or any other digital music/sound creation. It will give the participants a walkthrough some of the available Open Source options for digital music and audio production and how they can be combined to achieve a highly productive environment. It will cover aspects such as operating systems, multitrack recording, sound editing, mixing, mastering, applying effects, multichannel diffusion, sound synthesis, working with sound and video, among others. It will also review what are the software and hardware technical requirements in order to have a stable and functional Linux audio workstation.

103 Beaconsfield Ave, main floor, Toronto
Note: pre-registration and advance payment required
Call 416-910-7231 or email naisa@naisa.ca

In this workshop, participants will work with technology that allows the control of the movement of sound up, down and around the listener by using a gestural controller in realtime. Resources used include a 12.1 system (with 8 speakers at ear level and 4 mounted higher up) that uses the Polhemus Patriot sensor controller and software designed in MAX/MSP by Ben Thigpen.

Participants are asked to bring a 5 minute example of a work they have produced in the past and try their hand at navigating the movement of sound in space in realtime. Multichannel examples are fine provided they are brought to the workshop as a maximum of four stereo files rather than one encoded 5.1 signal. Darren Copeland will also provide history on the use of spatialization in electroacoustic music and other uses of it in New Adventures in Sound Art performances since 1998. Participants will receive a copy of the New Adventures in Sound Art publication "Sound in Space" that documents the use of space in contemporary music and sound art, which includes a 5.1 DVD recording.

WorkshopsThis workshop is geared towards the budding sound artist, the visual artist exploring sound, the community radio programmer wanting to expand their possibilities, and those with a general interest in sound. It will teach basic recording, editing, processing and mixing practices within the context of the history and aesthetic discourse of experimental audio art practice over the past 50 years.

For their subjects, participants will be asked to explore the sounds of places/things in the immediate area that are distinct and representative. This process will invite a dialogue between the art of representation and abstraction, which can be explored to great advantage in the audio art medium. Through the introduction of digital processing techniques and composition strategies, participants will get a taste of areas they can later explore intuitively and on their own after the workshop.

Presenter Bios

Anne Bourne

Anne Bourne is a composer, cellist and vocalist. At an early age, the experience of studying and performing the Bach A major Piano Concerto in recital at the National Arts Centre, coincided with a political initiation into her father’s world as a peacemaker, and anti-terrorist. This inspired Anne to commit to music as an act of peace. Later at York University, David Mott encouraged Anne’s decision to focus on contemporary cello, as a way to discover her own voice. Here Anne was also influenced by Trichy Sankaran, Casey Sokol, the renowned Fred Stone, and cellist Coenraad Bloemendal. Anne debuted as an improviser at the Music Gallery on St Patrick Street, in a tape-loop composition by the late composer James Tenney.

In 1994, Anne was invited to perform a distance concert with Pauline Oliveros, at the Kitchen in Manhattan, using technology to connect with groups in Paris, and Toronto in a live performance. After this Anne began attending the Rose Mountain Retreats in New Mexico, and commuted to New York to study composition and listening technique with Oliveros, until 2001. During this period, Anne journeyed to Egypt with a group created in New York, lead by author and director Ione, and singer Andrea Goodman, (Meredith Monk), to record their voices activating sacred sites. Anne is among the first seven certified to teach Oliveros’ material. In the spring of 2007, Anne became Communications Producer for Deep Listening Institute's International Convergence Project. As a peace initiative, 40 musicians from several countries were invited to make music on line, and then perform live in four locations in New York State. In the wake of this work, Anne was asked to speak about the role of musician as peace activist, at the University of Waterloo, at the Colleges of Music, and Peace and Conflict Studies.

Anne’s recent performances include an appearance in May 2007, at John Zorn’s NY club, The Stone, with Fred Frith and Eve Egoyan. A premiere of ‘One Long Peace’ a duet with Pauline Oliveros, at the Music Gallery's X Avant Festival in Toronto, and a live performance with filmmaker Peter Mettler at new media festival ‘inthemix’, in October 2007. Recordings include ‘Primordial Lift’, with Oliveros, Bourne, Tony Conrad and David Grubbs, recorded at Hallwall’s, and recently re-released, and ‘dearness’, a live concert recorded at the Rivoli, with John Oswald and Fred Frith, on Spool.

Anne ‘is an earthy, unrestrained musical force, she often accompanies her cello with otherworldly vocalizing’ COD
