10th anniversary of Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art

Sound Travels brings sound art to the outdoors on Toronto Island in a way that entices the curious and provides a unique experience each and every year. This 10th edition of the annual festival will this year feature an expanded set of indoor and outdoor interative installations and sound sculptures as well as indoor and outdoor concerts, site-specific performances, soundwalks, artist talks and workshops as well as the 2nd annual Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium.

SoundwalkThe Sound Travels 2008 festival includes Ellen Waterman and Robert Normandeau as composers-in-residence whose music will be featured in Sound Travels. Ellen and Robert will mentor the creation of new works by local emerging artists (TBA) in our emerging artist residency. Their works will be presented during the Sound Travels concert weekend alongside works by Jørgen Teller, David Ogborn, Wende Bartley, Hervé Berolini, Rob Piilonen and Matt Miller and more.

Sound Travels opens with Chantal Dumas' Le vivant bruit du corps · exercice no1 on June 5th, an interactive multi-media installation, followed by an opening performance on Barry Prophet's outdoor sound sculpture Synthecycletron on June 22nd.

Allik/Mulder's outdoor interactive sound installation Sonic Boardwalk will open on June 27th and both outdoor installations will remain open 24/7 until October 1st, 2008.

Resonating Bodies, Bumble Room by Peebles/King/Borros/Cruickshank will open at *new* gallery on July 12th and the remaining indoor installations will run at St. Andrew by-the-Lake church on Toronto Island. These Toronto Island installations will take place every Sunday afternoon beginning July 27th and include Wish You Were Here by Jennifer Schmidt, Colin Asquith, and Terry Nauheim, Sound Travels Documents (10th Anniversary edition) by Stefan and Laura Rose, and Sonic Portrait Listening Gallery curated by Darren Copeland.

Composers in Residence Ellen Waterman and Robert Normandeau will present concerts of their work while mentoring the work of emerging Canadian sound artists also featured at Sound Travels 2008 (names TBA). Also featured will be performances and works by Wende Bartley and Jørgen Teller.

The Canadian Electroacoustic Community, the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto and New Adventures in Sound Art are pleased to announce the 2nd annual Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium. The symposium will take place at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, 8-9 August 2008, and will lead directly into the main performance weekend of the annual Sound Travels festival on Toronto Island.

Alongside a selection of refereed papers and presentations, the symposium will feature keynote lectures by Sound Travels' composers-in-residence Robert Normandeau and Ellen Waterman.

A late-night event co-hosted by the angelusnovus.net group will provide a space for live electronic and improvised expressions in an "open-mic" format. The proceedings of the symposium will be published in a forthcoming issue of the CEC's online journal, eContact!.
