| Sound Travels Residencies and Workshops Sound Travels emerging artist residency Since April of 2007 four emerging Canadian artists have been working on new works under the mentorship of composers-in-residence Barry Truax and Trevor Wishart. These works will be premiered on August 10th and 11th as part of Sound Travels 2007. This is the third year that Sound Travels has included opportunities for emerging artists to work with senior artists and educators from outside of Toronto who provide artistic guidance and inspire new growth in the sound art field in Toronto. It will lead children and families through an exploration of the wonderful possibilities of the human voice. What Zen - A World of Improvisation Workshop Randy Raine-Reusch & Mei Han August 9 @ 7pm, Arraymusic Studio, 60 Atlantic Ave. #218 pre-registration required - email naisa@naisa.ca $15 per person / $10 for students (show student card) Note: must pre-register email naisa@naisa.ca or 416-910-7231 A dual perspective on improvisation from a traditionally trained Chinese performer learning to play jazz and free improv, and to a westerner's exploration of Asian instruments as vehicles for expression. Explored will be Ancient Asian musical aesthetics and musical forms like those in the Taoist and Zen inspired musics of Japan and China that are a constant wellspring of inspiration for contemporary artists from Debussey, to Cage, to Coltrane, to today's emerging artists. This will be an interactive workshop, so instruments are welcome. Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium free (must pre-register with David Ogborn - see details below) August 9-10, 2007 The Canadian Electroacoustic Community, the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto and New Adventures in Sound Art are pleased to announce the 2007 Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium. The symposium will take place at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, 9-10 August 2007, and will lead directly into the main performance weekend of the annual Sound Travels festival on Toronto Island. Alongside a selection of refereed papers and presentations, the symposium will feature keynote lectures by Sound Travels' composers-in-residence Barry Truax and Trevor Wishart. A late-night event hosted by the angelusnovus.net group will provide a space for live electronic and improvised expressions in an "open-mic" format. The proceedings of the symposium will be published in a forthcoming issue of the CEC's online journal, eContact!. The daytime symposium sessions will take place in room 330 of the Edward Johnson Building, Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. This building is about 5 metres south (towards the tree-filled park) and 50 metres west (past the abandoned planetarium) of the "Museum" subway station.
