IMMERSE YOURSELF IN A SOUND EXPERIENCE ON TORONTO ISLAND

TORONTO, ON - New Adventures in Sound Art turns Ward’s Island into a sonic playground in its 8th Sound Travels festival of Sound Art bringing sound art to Toronto Island in a way that entices the curious and provides a unique experience. This year's festival includes outdoor sound sculptures, indoor sound installations, indoor and SOUNDwalks.

Opening Sound Travels was the first in the series of Sign Waves outdoor interactive sound installations. Sonic Boardwalk by Kristi Allik and Rober Mulder (July 8 – Oct 1, 2006) generates a microsound landscape that is activated by the kinetic imprint of passing visitors. The work has been installed on a section of the boardwalk on Toronto Island between Wards Island and Centre island near the lakeshore. The interactive sound sculpture Synthecycletron by Barry Prophet will open August 16th (Aug 16 – Oct 1, 2006). Here's what David Jager had to say in NOW magazine about the Sonic Boardwalk <http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2006-07-20/art_reviews.php>

The indoor portion of Sign Waves 2006 at St. Andrew-by-the-Lake on Centre Island (July 23 – Sept 3, 2006, Sundays only, 2-6pm, PWYC) will include interactive soundscape installations Aur(e)ality,by Lori Beckstead and Journées Sonores: Canal de Lachine by Andra McCartney and Don Sinclair along with the site-specific audio installation Air Born by Reena Katz. Also included is the visually stimulating Sound Travels Documents by Stefan Rose and accompanying Listening Gallery curated by Darren Copeland

Featuring some of the many interesting acoustic sound marks on Toronto Island will be the SOUNDwalks (July 23 – Sept 3, Sundays only, 1:30 begins at ferry dock Ward’s Island & 5pm begins St. Andrew By-the-Lake church) with some special attractions along the way including the outdoor Sign Waves interactive installations. Note: there will be extra SOUNDwalks on the Sound Travels performance weekend that will include Guerilla Sound Events.

The Sound Travels performance weekend (August 11-13, 2006, various times, $5 per concert, outdoor events free) will include three concerts and four outdoor performances that promise to turn the ear as well as the eye. The outdoor Guerilla Sound Events by Peter Hatch, Nilan Perera, Emily Law, Debashis Sinha and Julia Male are short ‘spontaneous’ performance art pieces that draw attention to the contemporary urban soundscape. While often humorous in nature, they also bring attention to both the noise and recognizable ‘soundmarks’ of urban life, calling for a more active role in shaping our urban soundscapes. The concerts will include works by world renown Canadian and international electroacoustic composers Bernhard Gal, Denis Smalley, John Young, Sarah Peebles, Carey Dodge, Darren Copeland, Francisco Lopez and Stephane Roy.

Sound Travels festival of Sound Art is partially funded by the government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council and the SOCAN foundation. Thanks also to Diffusion i Media (http://www.electrocd.com) for their ongoing support.

New Adventures in Sound Art is a non-profit organization that produces performances and installations spanning the entire spectrum of electroacoustic and experimental sound art. Included in its Toronto productions are: Deep Wireless, Sound Travels, Sign Waves and SOUNDplay.
