FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - TORONTO, ON – September 26, 2011: - New Adventures in Sound Art is pleased to launch the 10th edition of the SOUNDplay Festival, October 7 to November 27, 2011. A meeting point for experimentation in sound art and new media encouraging new avenues for exploration, SOUNDplay 2011 features interactive installations, performances, screenings and workshops/artist talks.
In a world where technological advancement is seen as being the way to move forward, sound artists are continually challenged to reevaluate their artistic practice in the light of changing technologies. This year's SOUNDplay uses the theme of ABOUT TIME as a starting point for exploring new approaches to artistic creation as artists play with the possibilities of sound by both re-discovering old technologies and venturing into new ground to establish a whole new set of rules for artistic engagement. – Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art.
NAISA’s 10th annual SOUNDplay Festival will open with three installations Sonic Spaces: the Kinetics of Sound by Shawn Pinchbeck (Edmonton) continues to run Oct 7 - 29 after its Toronto premiere at Nuit Blanche. Sonic Spaces is a computer interactive sound installation that allows passers-by the opportunity to sonically explore the movement of their bodies through the space by transforming this movement into a multi-channel acousmatic sound environment.
Two more installations will be presented as part of SOUNDplay. Celebrate Halloween with the Sounds Scary Treasure Hunt on October 29 presented during the WCBA’s Boo at the Barns event at the Artscape Wychwood Barns and then drop by the NAISA space any Thursday to Sunday to watch and listen to SOUNDplay Videomusic installation in the window of the NAISA space (Nov 3 – 26, 2011).
The SOUNDplay performances create a cinema for the ear as well as the eye as they combine various new media technologies with sound on the theme of ABOUT TIME as their focus. November 12th includes a Toronto premiere performance by Montreal’s Zazalie Z of her work Sacred Spirit «Sur le territoire des esprits sacré alongside Freida Abtan’s (Montreal) videomusic work Flight of Birds (co-resented by the Toronto Image Society); November 19th includes a performance of Empire by Max Alexander alongside a screening of works chosen from NAISA’s 2010 call for submissions on the theme About Time.
