The Mississauga Office of the Arts and Culture in collaboration with New Adventures in Sound Art will serve up an audio feast in celebration of Art’s Birthday on January 17th on the theme Ecology: water, sound, air. Featuring performances by DJ-artists, dancers, singers, sound and media artists throughout the day. Swim with Fish (sounds) during the public swim, create your own art trading cards, learn how electronic gizmos work (NAISAtron and micro-radio transmitters) from the youth that made them, take a SOUNDwalk, step up to the mic (during open-mic) and of course there will be birthday cake! The entire event will be web-streamed on CKLN.fm. Bound not by transmission medium, weather or creative genre, Art's Birthday will be a feast of the acoustic imagination.

Art's Birthday is an annual exchange-art event celebrated since 1963 by artists and organizations around the world on January 17, featuring performance, installations and telecommunications art. Happy One Million and Forty-Sixth Birthday, Art!

4) NAISA Youth Initiative Updates

NAISA will be working with youth at the Erin Meadows community centre in December and January to create NAISAtrons and micro-radio transmitters, document sounds from in and around the community centre and create art with sound. These youth-created works will be presented and performed during Arts Birthday on January 17, 2009. NAISA gratefully acknowledges the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario, the Laidlaw Foundation, the Ontario Arts Council and the SOCAN foundation for their financial support of its NAISA youth initiative.

The NAISA youth initiative is targeted toward youth at high schools, arts centers and community centers. If you are a teacher or run a community centre and are interested in being a part of this youth initiative, email naisa@naisa.ca.
