How did Art's Birthday begin?
In 1963 French artist Robert Filliou. proposed a public holiday to celebrate the presence of art in our lives. He suggested that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born. According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. "Modest beginnings, but look at us now." In recent years, the idea has been taken up by a loose network of artists and friends around the world. Each year the Eternal Network evolves to include new partners - working with the ideas of exchange and telecommunications-art.

Global and Focal Listening
Sounding the Deep Listening pieces of Pauline Oliveros
In experiencing this sound practice of listening and vocal expression, one can locate essences of sound on a vibrational level, connecting anatomy to a natural environment, opening communication and invention. Sound as expression and sound as the energy of life can, with it’s flow, increase a person’s sense of well-being. Sound in the map of time can locate the still point of a person's vibrant creative expression. We will reference Oliveros' Deep Listening pieces and Sonic Meditations, offering an experience of subtle listening strategies that are simple, and encouraging a range of beautiful and powerful music that is inclusive of all walks of life.

It will teach basic recording, editing, processing and mixing practices within the context of the history and aesthetic discourse of experimental audio art practice over the past 50 years.
For their subjects, participants will be asked to explore the sounds of places/things in the immediate area that are distinct and representative. This process will invite a dialogue between the art of representation and abstraction, which can be explored to great advantage in the audio art medium. Through the introduction of digital processing techniques and composition strategies, participants will get a taste of areas they can later explore intuitively and on their own after the workshop. No experience is necessary. Equipment is supplied, however if you wish to bring your own laptop you may do so.

An ordinary event can be the inspiration for sound pieces that blend both fact and perception. “Inventive Reality” is a one day workshop by Victoria Fenner of Magnetic Spirits Productions to explore this transitional zone. It is a hands-on field recording and storymaking workshop to stir imaginations and get participants thinking and producing journalism in new ways …. for both radio and internet audio (podcasts). 5) Deep Wireless 2008
May 1-June 1, 2008
As part of a month-long celebration of radio and transmission art, radio artists, sound artists and enthusiasts can experience performances, sound installations, new commissions, special radio broadcasts, a CD launch and conference.
Deep Wireless/CBC Outfront commissioning/residency
New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) and CBC Radio's Outfront, for the sixth year in a row, is presenting the Deep Wireless commissioning and residency program. This residency program allows both experimental sound artists and radio producers outside of the experimental realm to approach the form of personal narrative from a perspective that combines words and sounds in a fresh and innovative fashion. Four Canadian artists - Tristan Whiston, Friendly Rich Marsella, Marjorie Chan and Eldad Tsabary - were selected from a Canada-wide call for submissions to produce a work for both CBC's Outfront radio broadcast and for presentation during Deep Wireless 2008 festival of radio and transmission art. To follow are descriptions of their works that will be created for Deep Wireless and CBC's Outfront:
Requiem for a Boxer
by Tristan Whiston
Requiem for a Boxer follows a recently retired boxer as he returns to the gym to say a final goodbye. This is his requiem, his ‘prayer for that which is departed’, an audio composition that reveals what is often referred to in boxing as “heart”, and the heart of this one-time boxer.
Tristan R. Whiston has worked in Toronto’s independent theatre community for the past 17 years. His radio documentary Middle C (made for Outfront <http://www.cbc.ca/outfront/listen/2007/07-02-12.html>), won the Premios Ondas award for International Radio and a silver medal at the New York Festivals. As an amateur boxer, Tristan fought in over 40 bouts, competing provincially, nationally and internationally. The Ugliest Sound in the World
by Friendly Rich
In 1964, Dr. Ronald Gutt set out on a 10-year quest to find and capture the ugliest sound in the world. He documented his hunt with a small tape machine that the BBC recently discovered in Dr. Gutt's secret archives. The "ugliest sound" was played once by Dr. Gutt at a conference in 1977, and the entire audience was hospitalized shortly after.
Friendly Rich Marsella is a composer from Georgetown, Ontario. Mr. Rich has composed background music for 3 seasons of MTV's The Tom Green Show. He is the leader of the 10-piece cabaret ensemble The Lollipop People. Rich resides in the small 10meg suburban website www.friendlyrich.com. Friendly Rich recently produced a children’s radio pilot for CBC Radio entitled “Dr. Calamari’s Cabinet”. Father Joe
by Eldad Tsabary
A sonic-portrait of father Cameron of St. Willibrord’s Parish in Montréal, who sees himself “as a fellow pilgrim” to people within and beyond the parish. The piece will include excerpts of interviews with father Cameron and members of the community regarding his life and matters of religion, community, and the afterlife.
In his compositions, Eldad explores intercultural and interreligious subject matter. His works were presented at Carnegie Hall, ISCM, and CCRMA, recorded by the Bulgarian Philharmonic and won prizes and mentions at Bourges, Harbourfront Centre, ZKM, and Madrid-Abierto, among others. He teaches electroacoustics and music technology at Concordia University and at Musitechnic in Montréal. In China, Dogs Say Wang Wang
by Marjorie Chan
In China, dogs say ‘wang wang’. In Spain, dogs say ‘guau guau’. In English, dogs say ‘woof woof’. A fun cross-cultural portrait of animal sounds from around the world.
Marjorie is a writer/performer based in Toronto. Her debut as a playwright was the acclaimed drama China Doll (Nightwood Theatre). She has written several radio dramas for CBC Radio, as well as several short librettos for Tapestry New Opera Works. Other commissioning companies include Deep Wireless (New Adventures in Sound Art), Wu Ming Dance Projects, Crow’s Theatre and Theatre Direct Canada. Her projects slated for the stage in 2008 include the opera Sanctuary Song (with composer Abigail Richardson) for Theatre Direct/Tapestry, as well as a nanking winter for Nightwood Theatre/Cahoots.
