3) ART'S BIRTHDAY & 100 YEARS of RADIO FAQ

What is Art's Birthday?

Art's Birthday is an annual exchange-art event celebrated on January 17th each year by a loose collection of artists and artist organizations from around the world. It is supported annually by the Western Front in Vancouver and Kunstradio at ORF radio in Vienna along with many others who link together via the internet and Satellite radio multiple broadcast streams from Europe, North America and Australia. For more information visit <http://www.artsbirthday.net>.

How did it begin?

Art's Birthday is inspired by Robert Filliou's fluxus work "A Whispered Art History" where he suggested that "1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born." According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. "Modest beginnings, but look at us now."

The First Radio Program Broadcast almost 100 years

The first extended broadcast of the human voice was transmitted through the air on December 24, 1906 from Brant Rock, Massachusetts. A Canadian engineer, Reginald Fessenden, had worked for Thomas Edison in his New Jersey Laboratory, and later became a professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

Fessenden was convinced that the "wireless telegraph", which then carried only the sputtering dots and dashes of Morse code, could carry the human voice. The most common use for wireless at that time was communication with merchant ships at sea, directing them to ports where the cargo would bring the best price. The shipboard wireless operators were called "Sparks."

An account by Fessenden's wife Helen reports his historic transmission, as the Sparks on ships across the Atlantic heard what they had dreamed about - and thought impossible. "...a human voice coming from their instruments - someone speaking... Then a women's voice rose in song. It was uncanny! Many of them called their officers to come and listen; soon the wireless rooms were crowded. Next someone was heard reading a poem. Then there was a violin solo; then a man made a speech."

The broadcast historian Eric Barnouw in, A Tower In Babel: A History of Broadcasting in the United States, reports that Fessenden himself played Gounod's "O, Holy Night" on the violin. He also read from the Christmas story from the Bible book of Luke and played a phonograph recording of Handel's "Largo.”

Deep Wireless / CBC Radio's Outfront 2007 commission/residency

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) and CBC Radio's Outfront, for the fifth year in a row, is presenting the Deep Wireless commissioning and residency program. This residency program allows both experimental sound artists and radio producers outside of the experimental realm to approach the form of personal narrative from a perspective that combines words and sounds in a fresh and innovative fashion. Four Canadian artists - Sarah Boothroyd, Steve Wadhams, Thelon Oeming and Robert Hoare - were selected from a Canada-wide call for submissions to produce a work for both CBC's Outfront radio broadcast and for presentation during Deep Wireless 2007 festival of radio and transmission art. The four commissioned works will be broadcast in May 2007 and will also be presented during the conference weekend performances.

Trans-local events planned for Deep Wireless 2007
