If you would no longer like to receive this newsletter please reply to this message with "delete" in the subject line. ======================= FEATURED HIGHLIGHTS AT THIS YEAR'S DEEP WIRELESS FESTIVAL New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) is pleased to launch the 5th annual Deep Wireless festival, a month long celebration of radio and transmission art including performances and sound installations, new commissions, special radio broadcasts and artist residencies as well as the Radio Without Boundaries conference and workshops for radio and sound artists, radio producers and enthusiasts. Highlights include: IN YOUR EAR Deep Wireless launches with the show In your Ear - two hours of performances that range from the serious to the hilarious. Hosted by Anna Friz with "Sprawl" by Threshold Theater, "the Bat" by Impatient Theatre Co., "Tell" by Soraya Peerbaye and special appearances by Paul Dutton, John Oswald (+Toronto celebrities), Christine Duncan, E.C. Woodley and many more to be announced, so stay tuned (on the web, in the underground or over the ether). In Your Ear will also be broadcast live-to-air on CKLN 88.1FM as well as recorded for for future broadcast by CBC radio. TREVOR WISHART IN CONCERT (sponsored by the British Council) Trevor Wishart will be presenting three of his seminal works: Red Bird, Two Women and The Division of Labour. Trevor is one of three Deep Wireless artists-in-residence and as part of his month-long residency will also be giving workshops, artist talks and creating a new piece that will be premiered on May 26th as part of Deep Wireless. POWER DOWN & POWER UP PERFORMANCES A series of performances called Power Down will be taking place throughout the month in which the Drake Hotel will unexpectedly turn off the music in the restaurant, cafe or other locations and transform itself into an Avant Garde Irish Pub with singers, acoustic musicians, and battery powered radio artists curated and directed by John Oswald. Hang around the Drake and re-live the unexpected perks of the 2003 blackout! Kathy Kennedy will be the Drake artist-in-residence for the month of May and will be leading a series of Power Up performances in which she will apply her skills in sonic choreography and public guerilla sound art to the Toronto urban soundscape with transmission arts performances in parks, street corners, and other sites of dense concentration of Torontonians. SOUND INSTALLATIONS AT THE DRAKE HOTEL & INTER/ACCESS Deep Wireless sound installations feature Radio Art Installations in the back lobby of the Drake Hotel and at Inter/access. Installations include "Journee Sonore: Canal de Lachine" by Andra McCartney, [murmur] and "Radio Art Salon" curated by Darren Copeland at the Drake; and "Soundroam (Toronto to Halifax)" by Eleanor King and Stephen Kelly at Inter/access. CBC RADIO'S OUTFRONT COMMISSIONS / OTHER RADIO/NET BROADCASTS Now in its fourth year, NAISA has once again produced the Deep Wireless Commissioning/ Residency, co-produced with CBC Radio's "Outfront" and Charles Street Video. This year's artists include Debashis Sinha, Micheline Roi, Christian Nicolay and Damiano Pietropaolo. The 2006 commissions will be broadcast on CBC Radio's "Outfront" (99.1-FM) May 3, 10, 17, and 24th at 8:43pm. To help celebrate radio art there will also be special Deep Wireless radio/net broadcasts on Resonance-FM, CKLN-FM, Free103point9 and others. DEEP WIRELESS 3 COMPILATION CD NAISA will be launching Deep Wireless 3 a radio art compilation 2-CD set on May 1st. It will include works by international radio and sound arts collected in response to the 2005 call for submissions on the theme "Power." This year’s CDs include international artists: Giuseppe Rapisarda, Anne Anglin, Bill Gilliam, Penn Kemp, Michael Townsend, Dan Bernard, Eleanor King, Stephen Kelly, Genevieve Robertson, Jason Ellerbeck, James Wyness, Victoria Fenner, Jill Summers, Christian Nicolay, Sarah Boothroyd, Mark McLaren, Ivan Elezovic, Eric Leonardson, Stephen Lategan, Dallas Simpson, Keith De Mendonca and the Church of Harvey Christ. ================ 2) KEY SPEAKERS AT RADIO WITHOUT BOUNDARIES CONFERENCE "Radio Without Boundaries" will explore the many potentials and boundaries of radio and transmission art. Radio and sound artists, radio producers and enthusiasts attend this conference from far and wide to listen to lectures, panel discussions, and artist talks by leading international curators, producers and artists in the radio and transmission arts field. This year’s conference includes internationally reknown transmission and media artist Tetsuo Kogawa (Japan (http://anarchy.translocal.jp/)); seminal radio artist and composer Trevor Wishart (UK, sponsored by the British Council (http://www.trevorwishart.co.uk/)); radio producer and artist as well as one of Resonance-FM’s founders Magz Hall (UK, sponsored by the British Council (http://www.rebuffer.com/lawandauder/artists/magzhall.htm)); web-radio station and transmission arts presenter free103point9 artists and staff Tianna Kennedy and Matt Mitkas (USA (http://www.free103point9.org/)); Prix Italia (2005) and Peabody (2006) award-winning show the Wire with Jowi Taylor, Paolo Pietropaolo and Chris Brookes (http://www.cbc.ca/thewire/); Kathy Kennedy (Montreal (http://www.kathykennedy.ca)); and Joe Milutis (USA (http://www.joemilutis.com/)). =================== 3) EARLY BIRD DEADLINE FOR RADIO WITHOUT BOUNDARIES CONFERENCE Don’t miss out on the early bird discount for the Radio Without Boundaries conference. If you’re one of the first 50 people to give us feedback on our on-line survey, you could win tickets to In Your Ear, the Deep Wireless opening show. ================== 5) SIGN WAVES OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS ON TORONTO ISLAND SET TO OPEN JUNE 1ST NAISA has commissioned Barry Prophet and the team of Kristi Allik and Robert Mulder to create two new outdoor interactive installations that are set to open June 1st and run until October 1st on Toronto Island. ================= 6) NEW SPATIALIZATION SYSTEM FEATURING A REAL-TIME PHYSICAL CONTROLLER NAISA Artistic Director Darren Copeland is working on a new sound system that will include 12 speakers in a support structure and a physical controller that will move sound around and above the audience in real time.
