A Celebration of Radio Art

2004 Call for Submissions and
Commissioning Opportunity

New Adventures in Sound Art

Call for works
What is your culture? Does radio reflect your culture or way of life?

Let us hear your ideas and how they represent your world. Create a piece for radio that reflects your culture and examines social issues that are relevant to you.

New Adventures in Sound Art invites submissions of any duration less than 60 minutes in length that examine cultural and social issues in the first person, make use of original sound sources in interesting and innovative ways and are suitable for radio broadcast. Here's your chance to create radio art in your own cultural voice.

Works that use pop or mainstream idioms are not discouraged, but must also make use of soundscape, personal narrative, and must consist entirely of original material.

Pieces will be selected for broadcast within Canada and on several international radio stations in May 2004 as part of the Deep Wireless festival. Deep Wireless 2004 will celebrate radio as a creative and artistic medium for cultural expression.

A small number of artists will be chosen from the submissions to be part of the Deep Wireless Commissioning Programme in 2004 co-produced with CBC Radio's "Out Front" with residencies at Charles Street Video.

Outfront is radio stories about real life on CBC Radio 1. It's all about your ideas, your experiences, your perspectives, your story. It's fifteen minutes of storytelling, experimental audio and new ways of making radio. Stories told from Canadian perspectives about the Canadian experience. You won't hear traditional storytelling, and you won't hear reporters or hosts. Outfront explores new ways of presenting stories which break the radio mold.

Radio 1 can be heard in Toronto at 99.1 FM.
