Sound and Soundwalking - with speakers Hildegard Westerkamp, Victoria Fenner, Michelle Nagai, and Mark Laliberte.

May 26, 2004 12:30 pm Starting at 1 Queens Park
May 27, 2004 12:30 pm Starting at 491 College St
led by Victoria Fenner & Michelle Nagai

Victoria Fenner and Michelle Nagai will lead two different SOUNDwalks through Toronto as part of the Deep Wireless festival.

Victoria FennerBy letting in familiar sounds and actively seeking out what we have not heard before, we might discover something completely unexpected! During both SOUNDwalks we'll concentrate on opening our ears to the Toronto cityscape. What might we hear? Changes in acoustic space as we move from one place to the next; Voices speaking in many different languages; Tiny sounds, loud sounds, very far away sounds? Two different spaces, two different soundscapes.

During the first walk, we'll we pay a visit to Queens Park and the surrounding area. From the spaciousness of the park to the small concrete plazas between towering high-rises, we'll explore both the macro and micro acoustics of the city. We'll listen for the way in which acoustic design affects our ability to situate ourselves. We'll seek out sonic clues to help understand the dynamic relationship between sound and space in the places where we live.

On the second SOUNDwalk, we'll give your ears a different kind of work-out as we travel through Kensington Market, an acoustically, historically and socially distinct area of the inner city. It's a place which presents a vast choice of sounds to listen to - shop keepers from many parts of the globe, young people lounging in outdoor cafes, cars and bicycles, children at play -- in short, the full range of sounds of the urban inner city, from the sublime to the annoying. During the Kensington SOUNDwalk we'll encourage you to listen for textures, rhythms and silences inside the sounds as we consider the question, "how does one navigate the world - physically and culturally - through sound"?

Each walk will be preceded by a short chat to introduce new SOUNDwalkers to the practice and let everyone know the route we'll follow. During the walks, we'll proceed without talking and we'll encourage you to put your entire focus on SOUND. Afterwards, a brief discussion will take place and we'll invite you to share any thoughts about the SOUNDwalk experience that you had.

All together, each SOUNDwalk event will last about an hour. And since sound happens all the time, rain or shine, participants should dress for the weather.

May 30, 2004 SOUNDwalk @ 5:30pm Starting at 491 College St
led by Hildegard Westerkamp

Hildi Westerkamp

What better way to end the Deep Wireless "Radio Without Boundaries" conference, then with a SOUNDwalk! Hildegard Westerkamp, one of the most widely known champions of acoustic ecology, is a founding member of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE) and is co-editor of its journal Soundscape. Hildegard will be leading a SOUNDwalk beginning at the Latvian house and taking SOUNDwalkers on an exploration of nearby natural soundscapes.
