About Art's Birthday (history)

Art's Birthday was proposed in 1963 by French artist Robert Filliou to celebrate the presence of art in our lives. It has since been celebrated on January 17 as an annual exchange-art event by a collection of artists and artist organizations around the world.

This marks the second year of Art's Birthday celebrations in Mississauga that explores performance, installations and exchange-art. Explorations with telecommunications have long been part of this event in which artists from around the world unite over radio waves, via the Internet, and through mail art. As Mississauga forges its new identity for the 21 st century, communications are key to its development, and the activities for Art's Birthday are a perfect forum for exploring creative ways to interface with local and global communities.
