In December 2007, New Adventures in Sound Art launched its NAISA Youth Initiative.
The NAISA youth education initiative includes the creation of new sound art works by youth through collaboration as an outcome to a series of workshops that teach an understanding of basic sound art, electronics, improvisation and composition. Hands-on workshops include assembling an electroacoustic instrument (the NAISAtron created by Rob Cruickshank), making art with sound, making radio and finally the exploration of sound in space. This initiative is targeted toward youth at high schools, arts centers and community centers. Youth learn to create art entirely with Sound, Radio, Electronics, and/or Performance through exploration using technology. If you are a teacher or run a community centre and are interested in being a part of this youth initiative, please contact Nadene at naisa@naisa.ca
As at September 2008, NAISA has created and/or participated in five youth residencies in Ottawa, Mississauga and Toronto in which youth have learned to create art with sound. Co-producing and/or collaborators have included MASC in Ottawa, the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Youth Troopers for Global Awareness and the Mississauga Office of the Arts and Culture.
Plans are underway for two new exciting youth residencies in the Toronto area scheduled to begin in 2008/09.
NAISA gratefully acknowledges the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario, SOCAN and the Laidlaw Foundation for their financial support of its NAISA youth initiative.
A web archive of these residencies will be added shortly to this web-page.
