Trevor Wishart began working in the studio in an attempt to integrate the sounds of the real world into his musical activity. He soon became interested in sound metamorphosis as a means of manipulating these sounds and creating a musical amd 'poetic' discourse. With the advent of digital technology he was able to develop the sophisticated (software) instruments for sound morphing and transformation. He will talk about the various different approaches used in 'Red Bird', 'Two Women', 'The Division of Labour', 'Fabulous Paris', 'Imago' and 'Gobalalia'.
Winner of the 2005 Prix Italia & the Director's Choice Award at Third Coast Festival Incorporating interviews, music and sound in an innovative way, The Wire creates a unique radio experience that's somewhere between documentary, a remix and a music show. The Wire also features a commissioned remix of each episode by a DJ/remix producer. Jowi, Chris and Paolo will discuss their vision of the program, the roles they played to make it, and the process they followed in bringing it all together. Sunday Sessions
Joe Milutis will perform "Airspace," a radiophonic chamber piece broadcast to radios in the room by way of an iRock transmitter (bring your own radios!). In addition, he will discuss why even the radio we like is bad radio. Expect forays into the history of mysticism and the theories of Gilles Deleuze. Introduction
This spring, the CBC Radio 1 program Outfront and New Adventures in Sound Art (with residencies at Charles Street Video) collaborated and co-produced the fourth Deep Wireless commissioning/residency programme. Four artists were chosen to produce radiophonic artworks for broadcast on Outfront, and in performance as part of the Deep Wireless Festival. During this session, the participating artists will play excerpts from their commissioned pieces and talk about what they discovered about creating works that will work on the radio and in live performance.
Showing the history of the Mini FM movements in Japan in the 80s, Tetsuo Kogawa will demonstrate how it anticipated the end of the dichotomy of "sender" and "receiver" and will argue a new relationship of art with technology. Radio art and Wireless art will be re-defined. Kathy Kennedy will discuss her performance pieces that use low watt radio transmission. These specifically involve site-specific performances, using the radio receiver as a device for displacing and recontextualizing the original audio source. Radio of the Future This panel will discuss questions such as how new technologies play a role in new approaches to form and content; will access to the radio of the future be limited to those with a computer; who will be the creators and who the receivers of the radio of the future? Saturday and Sunday Sessions
Limited to 5 participants per session (pre-registration required), each participant is asked to bring a 5 minute (max) example of a radio production that he or she has completed or is currently working on and play it for comments and feedback from everyone present, including moderators Steve Wadhams (CBC) and Darren Copeland (New Adventures in Sound Art).
Participants in this workshop will take part in a short soundwalk, and do a series of listening exercises and focused discussions on everyday sounds and their appearance in mediated soundtracks. The workshop is designed to increase your awareness of the sound environment, so that environmental ambiances can play a more integral role in your future work.
